Hair, Healing & What We Inherited

Woman with long hair viewed from behind

Braids are an ancestral healing practice. We didn’t invent it. We inherited it.

Braiding is repetitive. Section, part, cross, repeat. It’s A Generational Experience. Your grandmother did it. Her grandmother did it. Hers before her. That rhythmic, repetitive motion is a physical and energetic exchange that creates a calming environment and opens something up in the person receiving and in the person doing the work.

That’s why elders didn’t let everybody play in their head. If her energy is off, yours will be too.

They could take so much. But they could not take the ritual of tending to each other.

Although they wanted us to hate our hair, braiding was one of the few pieces of our Black identity that could not be fully stripped away. Women still had to carve out the time. Still had to sit with each other. Still had to part and section and braid with intention, adorning each other’s heads and pampering each other.

The tightness you feel when a braid is laid fresh? The physical sensation, that pull, mirrors the silent resilience that has been carried in Black people’s heads for generations. Hold it together, keep it moving, don’t fall apart in public. The braid snatches you the same way.

How The Braider Benefits

Rhythmic Meditation: The repetitive motions of braiding hair require focus and act as active meditation. This rhythmic pattern shifts the brain’s focus away from daily stresses, resulting in a relaxed state.

How The Client Benefits

Vagus Nerve Stimulation and muscle tension release: The rhythmic pulling, sectioning, and massaging of the scalp stimulate the vagus nerve and loosen muscle tension in the head, neck, and shoulders. This signals to the brain that the body is safe, halting the “fight-or-flight” response and transitioning the body into rest.

Silver Sew-In Tips

  • The Beehive Braiddown: Use a beehive braid pattern for your foundation. It distributes weight evenly and reduces tension on your natural hair compared to the straight-back method.
  • One Long Piece Of Thread: Use as long a piece of string as possible. One continuous piece of thread means fewer ends and fewer spots that could possibly come undone. It lasts longer.
  • Consistency Is Everything: Keep the spacing between your sewing loops as consistent as possible. This gives you a cleaner finish that sits flat and stays put.
