Butt Length Loc Retwist Routine

Woman with long locs standing among beaded curtains

1. Always retwist the same direction. Consistency is key. Retwisting the same direction every single time trains your hair and reduces thinning at the roots.

2. Retwist frequency: 3-4× a year. You don’t need to be in the chair every month. 3 or 4 retwists a year will keep your locs healthy without over-manipulating them. Excess tension causes breakage.

3. Style versatility. To keep my hair looking presentable between retwists, I rotate between these styles:

  • Month 1: Fresh Retwist
  • Month 2: Two strand twists
  • Two Weeks: Take out the twists and enjoy your curls
  • Month 3/4: Procrastinate the retwist as long as possible. A messy bun is my go-to. On a good day I’ll lay those edges down with She’s Da Bomb edge control and keep it moving.

4. Happy to be nappy. Sometimes your roots are going to be grown out. That’s okay! I have locs, the roots are part of the style. My hair is done… and healthy. Don’t freak out over the idea of having perfectly neat parts 24/7 — give yourself time to grow.
